USAID / Kenya will be hiring Banyan Global to conduct a Gender Analysis to inform USAID / Kenya’s 2020-2025 Country Development Cooperation Strategy (CDCS).

The upcoming Kenya CDCS will most likely focus on Health, Nutrition, Education and Youth, Natural Resource Management, Democracy and Governance, and Economic Growth.

The Team Leader will work with a research team, and collaborate with USAID / Kenya staff and partners, local academia, government institutions and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to gather data for the Gender Analysis.

The consultant will travel to Kenya for four weeks to conduct the field work for the Gender Analysis (likely to take place January 2020).


  • Manage a team comprised of a National Senior Gender Expert and National Gender Expert;
  • Lead the preparation of an inception report, which will include a review of existing literature and resources, and the description of a methodology for the Gender Analysis;
  • Lead the preparation of a work plan that details the process for data collection, analysis and interpretation, the roles / tasks / levels of effort of team members, and a table of contents of the Gender Analysis;
  • Lead the process of drafting all data collection instruments, in partnership with the National Senior Gender Expert and National Gender Expert;
  • Produce a populated index of the Gender Analysis Report;
  • Travel to Kenya for 4 weeks and lead a team of national and international gender experts to conduct the Gender Analysis;
  • Lead in-country key informant interviews and focus groups for the Gender Analysis in Kenya;
  • Present preliminary findings for the Gender Analysis to USAID / Kenya staff and partners;
  • Lead the drafting of the final Gender Analysis report, make revisions based on USAID and Banyan Global feedback, and submit the final Gender Analysis report.
  • Qualifications

  • 15 years of international experience in gender analysis in the development areas of democracy and governance, health and education, economic growth, trade, private sector engagement and environment;
  • Master’s degree in sociology, anthropology, or a relevant social science field;
  • Leadership skills, be able to lead meetings, coordinate, and gather different points of view of team members, draft initial document with conclusions and recommendations, and prepare the report and presentations;
  • Familiarity with public policies addressing gender and social inclusions gaps, gender-based violence, disability, and USAID gender agendas and programs;
  • Must have demonstrated experience and ability to access and analyze qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-method data to understand economic and social inequalities based on gender, and knowledge of how such inequalities impact poverty reduction and economic growth;
  • Ability to communicate diplomatically and clearly with USAID staff and partners, and national organizations;
  • Superior speaking and writing skills in English are required.
