Responsibilities

  • Executing the changes identified by the fit-for purpose reviews, including the changes to the organizational structure.
  • Refocusing tasks in the Division to deliver impactful results in identified priority areas.
  • Improving communication and work-efficiency within the Division.
  • Leading, supervising and carrying out the work programme of the Branch under his / her responsibility.
  • Ensuring that the outputs produced maintain high-quality standards; that reports are clear, objective and based on comprehensive data.
  • Assisting the Director in preparing the work programme of the Division, determining priorities, and allocating resources for the completion of outputs and their timely delivery.
  • Undertaking or overseeing the programmatic / administrative tasks necessary for the functioning of the Division.
  • Recruiting staff, taking due account of geographical balance.
  • Managing, guiding, developing and training staff under his / her supervision.
  • Fostering teamwork and communication among staff.
  • Leading and supervising the organization of meetings, seminars, etc. on substantive issues. Managing the substantive preparation and organization of such meetings or seminars.
  • Participating in international, regional or national meetings and providing programmatic / substantive expertise on an issue, or holding programmatic / substantive and organizational discussions with representatives of other institutions.
  • Representing the Division at international, regional or national meetings.

    Education

    Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in environmental sciences or in a discipline related to the work of ecosystems management is required.

    A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

    Work Experience

    A minimum of fifteen (15) years of progressively responsible work experience in project / programme management in the context of Ecosystems management or related area is required.

  • Five (5) years of relevant experience at the international level with at least three (3) years in a supervisory capacity;
  • demonstrated experience in managing performance of teams and staff with specialist expertise and mobilizing resources in an international environment is required.

    At least five (5) years of relevant work experience in ecosystems policy development, regional programme / project coordination and resource mobilization is desirable.

    Languages

    English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required.

    Working knowledge of French and / or Spanish is an advantage. Knowledge of other UN official languages is desirable.

    Assessment

    Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

  • This position is temporarily available 364 days. If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment.
